The Upper Langkloof Appellation is arguably the coolest wine growing region in South Africa. These extreme climatic conditions ensure complexity of fruit and unique grapes that are handcrafted into world-class wines.
After hand harvesting the grapes they are transported to cool-rooms, where the temperature is maintained at 4 degrees Celsius for twelve hours to cool the grapes.
Upon arrival at the wine cellar the cold grapes are sorted before being crushed and pumped into open cement troughs. There the juice is allowed to ferment on the skin cap for eight to fourteen days, extracting the vital character and colour from the skins into the wine as it develops. Malolactic fermentation is completed in imported French Oak Barrels.
Styled into classic and elegantly structured wine by ageing it in these barrels for a further eighteen to twenty-four months. The Goose Expression 2008 is a 50% Shiraz and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The prominent Shiraz ensures harbaceous tones and white pepper flavours which fuse with the soft, blackberry undertones of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is truly a unique new-world blend, that achieves the much sought after, traditional old-world balance and elegance.
Wine Style - The nose is full of black currant, ripe cherry, spice, chocolate, and subtle cigarbox smoky flavours. The tannins are ripe and soft and the wine has a long clean aftertaste.
Harvested at 26 Balling, destemmed and cold soak for 5 days in open fermentersat 12C. Fermented with WE375 Anchor yeast at 23C for 6 days, with 15 minute punchdown every 4 hours for 5 days. Then left on the skins for 10 days and pressed into 500L barrels. Aged in 44% new Oak (75% French and 25% USA Oak) for 12 months.
Wine Style The Gander Sauvignon Blanc, being a blend of two "worlds apart", adds for an exciting and unique tasting experience. Health acids and complexity for the Langkloof valley, together with the riper and more fruity Stellenbosch Hills vineyards, have created an surprisingly balanced and fresh drinking wine. A sudden fuller body than expected, this wine is a better value "easy drinker",and would compliment any curious Sauvignon Blanc fan's taste buds right away! Growing hundreds of miles apart, these two wines have been blended to create a first of it's kind in the Western Cape!
The very cool and fresh "terroir" allows for late season ripening and fruit of great elegance and finesse. Typically, these are complex and sophisticated wines, which are appreciated by wine connoisseurs around the world. The Goose Sauvignon Blanc is the flagship white in our range with a very limited production each year. Due to the very high natural acidity of the fruit these wines have a zesty nature and a strong mineral driven style. The bouquet of the wine is Cape Floral driven with a sure tropical distinction. Small hints of gooseberry support the nose and on entry the palate of the wine is very generous with an exciting zesty structure. The wine lingers on the palate and shows great maturation potential.
Packaged in a traditional Riesling shaped bottle and quite appropriate really as the acidity in our Sauvignon Blanc grapes are all natural, which culminates in a beautifully, balanced and broad mouth feel so reminiscent of the great wines of Sancerre, Alsace and Mosel."
What's Good for the Goose, must be good for the Gander!
